Commissioner Carlos Moedas will host a High-Level Ministerial and Scientific event on 12-14 July 2017 in Lisbon, Portugal, joined by high-level government representatives from Brazil and South Africa, as well as from the European Union.

This event will celebrate the launch of the South Atlantic Flagship Initiative between the European Union, Brazil and South Africa, aiming to better understand and protect marine ecosystems and the link between oceans and climate.

EuroMarine will hold a session on 12 July at 13:15, to introduce the network and how it assists scientists from its member institutes and beyond to collaborate and innovate for marine science, highlighting the potential to achieve big results with incentive funding.

A Statement on Atlantic Ocean Research and Innovation Cooperation between the European Union, Brazil and South Africa is planned to be signed during the event. This Statement will build on our bilateral achievements, namely the signing of bilateral Declarations of Intent on Marine Research and Innovation Cooperation with Brazil and South Africa, and the development of the South-South Framework for Scientific and Technical Cooperation in the South and Tropical Atlantic and Southern Ocean.

The signing of this Statement will cement the ambitions for intensifying our joint cooperation areas, which include, among others:

  • climate and ecosystem approaches;

  • earth and ocean observation and forecasting systems;

  • food security, fisheries management and aquaculture; and

  • ocean technology

The signing of the Statement will take place at the Belém Tower on 13 July, which bears testimony to some of the first Atlantic voyages, proving a fitting setting to celebrate this strong and successful cooperation.

Moreover, this Statement will realise the mutual benefits that would accrue from closely linking research activities in the South Atlantic and Southern Ocean with those in the North Atlantic. By tackling together the grand challenges and opportunities of the Atlantic Ocean as a system, exploiting the benefits it holds for our citizens, we enter a new era of Blue Enlightenment.

The wider Atlantic Ocean community gathered in Lisbon, Portugal, marking the beginning of the “A New Era of Blue Enlightenment” event and the potential of collaborations for years to come with a firm commitment for greater cooperation between the European Union, Brazil and South Africa. Key stakeholders including high-level government representatives, industry experts, funding agencies, research organisations, marine networks, foundations and academia gathered from 12-14 July 2017 to highlight their work so far and identify opportunities to collaborate on ocean research. The South Atlantic Flagship Initiative between these regions was launched, aiming to better understand and protect marine ecosystems, taking advantage of closely linking research activities.

The EuroMarine workshop was conceived to:

  • Highlight the contribution that EuroMarine has made to the research community;
  • Identify the potential breadth of collaborations and opportunities for cooperation on ocean research available within the network;
  • Provide an example of a network model that could be extended to other regions; and,
  • Invite relevant parties to explore funding opportunities and collaborations with the network.

The workshop attendees celebrated EuroMarine’s model and there was mutual agreement that such a network illustrates how the sustained support of basic research is important to be able to enable applied research that is required to inform policy makers.
