OYSTER (Orienting young scientists of Euromarine) is looking for enthusiastic, engaged and creative early career scientists who are willing to play an important role in advocating EuroMarine and promoting the role and relevance of marine science and the ocean in general. OYSTER in particular seeks individuals with interests/knowledge in web sites development and video making to join the working group.
The OYSTER network was set up in early 2019 following the success of the 2018 Young Scientists Working Group. The goal of OYSTER is to support a bottom-up approach and help understand and develop the marine landscape of early career researchers. The working group currently consists of 18 early career scientists from across EuroMarine member institutes. The specific goals of OYSTER are to:
- Establish a permanent network designed and driven by young researchers themselves
- Engage, empower and assist early career marine scientists by establishing a platform for networking and collaboration
- Support EuroMarine bottom-up approach by communicating early career marine scientists’ matters of concern to develop ways the network can help to address these concerns

The ideal candidate is a PhD student or post-doctoral researcher within 5 years after after the completion of PhD and who is based at a EuroMarine Member Organisations or Invited Member Organisations. Individuals should have experience in marine-based research and be willing to use their creativity, imagination, communication and interpersonal skills to help promote marine science and EuroMarine activities. To enable a maximum representation of EuroMarine members, OYSTER would particularly like to invite applications from EuroMarine institutes which do not yet have an early career researcher in the OYSTER network (a list of those can be found here).
The position will commence in January 2021 and commitment for one-year is required*. This timeframe will allow members to follow projects from start to finish. Workshop attendance (should in-person workshops take place) is funded and during these workshops (either in-person or remote) early career researchers will engage with topics such as open science, PhD/post-doctoral responsibilities as well as career development and contribute to the design of the OYSTER plans for capturing and communicating views and concerns of early career marine scientists.

* If an OYSTER member leaves the EuroMarine institute he/she will be allowed to stay on until the end of the year.
